The Rejuvenating Power of Moving

ACR head honcho Drew Johnson just moved, and dayum has it got him reflecting. Read his musings below, especially if you're thinking about making a change in your life.

There’s a difference between the words “house” and “home”. A house is a well-organized pile of sticks and stones that we use in order to experience the intangible idea of home. A home is a storied place, a place where we craft our identity in the present tense and ultimately root our experiences in to the narrative of our lives. It’s a place where we’re safe and can be ourselves. It’s a place where we tinker endlessly; where time doesn’t exist. Or maybe I’m being too grandiose and it’s really just a place where we binge on Netflix only to pass out with half-eaten string cheese sticks on our bellies. You’re free to choose your own interpretation.

One of my favorite things about being a REALTOR is the role I play in helping Austinites—whether lifelong, recently transplanted, or soon-to-be—discover their ideal sense of home. Besides all that pretty verbiage I mentioned above, it’s also a launchpad for your revamped lifestyle. A new home is a chance to start afresh, a chance to assume a new identity and take risks not previously possible. Out with the old, in with the new…a new neighborhood, new parks, new friends, new happy hour haunts, and new energy.

The number of new chapters that Austin Craft Realty has helped kick off is substantial. We successfully assisted in 976 moves in 2017—mostly apartment leases, but a good amount of first-time homebuyers, too. It means the world to us to play a pivotal role in the new beginnings for our clients, whether it’s a move across the street or across the globe.

So, you can say we know what it’s like to be in the co-pilot seat and effectively view the search through your eyes as your trusted confidant. But recently, after closing on a home in Austin’s red-hot Eastside, the whole process has me re-discovering the rejuvinating power of moving that our clients are experiencing everyday, and it has been a special process of reflection.

Moving is the best way to distance yourself from anything detrimental in your life! Toxic relationships, grueling commutes, constant temptations, lack of stimulation. Not to say that your problems will magically dissolve like a puddle in the Texas sun, but you’ll enter a new headspace in your new home. And the opportunity to PURGE yourself of all the junk you’ve been hoarding is reason enough!

Moving is also a golden opportunity to make your life more convenient by cutting down on unnecessarily long commutes or putting you closer to your friends. A new space lends itself to the pursuit of new hobbies. Now that I have a dedicated room to playing music, I can have my friends come over to jam out and explore new musical ideas. I’ve also got a small little yard, but it’s enough to keep a doggo happy with my busy schedule.

In conclusion, the best way to add a spark to your life is by experience of rejuvenating power of moving to a new home. Whether it’s cross town or cross country, the team of savvy, energetic agents at Austin Craft Realty are always happy to lend a helping hand. And the best part of it all is that our apartment locating and first-time homebuyer guidance services are free for you!

Drew Johnson

Owner + Broker

Originally from Ft. Worth, Texas, Drew fell in love with the city of Austin as a kid when he was captivated by its eclectically progressive lifestyle and music scene. Drew spent four years at Trinity University earning his degree in Business Marketing, during which time he spent a semester abroad in Sevilla, Spain.

Upon landing in Austin in 2010, Drew hit the ground running by becoming a top apartment locator in Austin before leveling-up to be a Realtor to help folks with buying homes. But being just a Realtor wasn't enough, and Drew had a vision for a brokerage that did both sales and apartment locating at a high level. With this dual expertise, Drew founded Austin Craft Realty in early 2016.

In late 2019, Drew decided to pivot his company towards the fast-paced, fun, and opportunity-friendly apartment locating industry. Already experts in the field, ACR was re-branded to Craft Apartment Locators in October and is no longer be associated with the Austin Board of Realtors. Drew is very excited for the opportunities that come with focusing on what his company does best: helping Austinites find fantastic deals on Austin apartments.

While Drew is no longer a Realtor himself, he has excellent connections in real estate and is happy to recommend a great Realtor to you.

When Drew isn’t working hard to constantly improve Craft Apartment Locators, you might find him bicycling around town, serving on the board of the Young Men’s Business League, playing saxophone at some of Austin's best venues, and enjoying the latest craft brews. He is a proud homeowner in the exciting and vibrant East Austin 78702.
